Argumentative Essay Refection

I chose to address Senator Sanders’ Medicare For All bill by writing to New York Senator Kristin Gillibrand. For the most part, everyone wants to have affordable and accessible healthcare, but the method to approach it is where we get friction. During my research process, I had an epiphany. I was going through my daily feed from the Associated Press and came across an article that emphasized how the number of primary care physicians are decreasing. This sparked my interest on our current state of healthcare. Most importantly, one of my long-term goals is to become a physician-scientist, so I thought it would behoove me to gain insight.

I tailored my essay specifically for Senator Gillibrand. I became aware that I couldn’t sound conservative or lean towards the right with my ideas, so I tried my best to be a reasonable and a “moderate” writer. I also didn’t bash the notion of MfA because that would have put me in a bad position. It might give the impression that I don’t want to see Americans get the health coverage they need, which isn’t my intention.

For the most I believe my essay was flawless, but one thing that I could have addressed was how my proposal would get funded and how it would select the medical students. In the revised essay, I mentioned that we should reach out to American philanthropists like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. From their past generous donations, we can see that they genuinely support education related organizations, so I don’t see why they wouldn’t want to help out. Theoretically, all medical students are competent, but for the purpose of the assignment I stated that we could first select a few students, which would be based on previous academic success and letter of recommendations, and later expand it to all of the medical students.
